Landscape -
the organization of space

  1. Yes, this is much much better than Merriam-Webster has to offer.

    Wikipedia does a better job as well:
    Landscape comprises the visible features of an area of land, including physical elements such as landforms, living elements of flora and fauna, abstract elements like lighting and weather conditions, and human elements like human activity and the built environment.

    You say "organize" which implies more action than their passive "comprise". "Comprise" means "to be made up of", and doesn't say anything about the manipulation that is required. So I like your "organize" better. But landscape can be produce more than just space. So the rest of the wikipedia entry is helpful.

    You remember your text book from Planting Design;

    Collins and Anderson, "Plant Communities of New Jersey", (New Jersey: Rutgers University Press, 1994), 5-6.

    Here they define ecology as the study of interconnections among living organisms and their environment.

  2. To my mind in the section "mapping operations" it is described pretty good, how to produce a map correctly and it helps to develop different types of maps used for different exercises. by the division into "field", "extracts" and "plotting" i first realised how many different types of mapping could be created. another interesitng point is the reverse map joaquin torres-garcia. a nother view often offers totally new opportunities!
